Susannah Zucker (b. 1966) is a figurative ceramicist living near Asheville NC. Her interest in making figurative art is rooted in a long history of body centered research including gymnastics and dance training, anatomy and physiology coursework, Massage Therapy practice and Buddhist sitting practice. Her sculptures reflect this research by giving expression to many aspects of corporeal human experience: from physical virtuosity to trauma: the fragility, beauty and resilience of the bodies we live in.
Susannah received her BFA from the California College of Arts and Crafts in 1994. She lived in the San Francisco Bay Area for 15 years and was profoundly influenced by the rigorous and cutting-edge arts culture there. She received her MFA from the University of Georgia in 2006. Her sculptures have been featured in solo and group exhibitions in museums and galleries in New York, Texas, Mississippi, California, Georgia, Colorado, Virginia, Tennessee and North Carolina.
Susannah was recently included in Beautiful Bizarre Magazine’s Top 100 Sculptors of 2018 on Instagram. Other awards include a residency position at Anderson Ranch Arts Center, Best in Show for the California Clay Competition and The Artist’s Guild of Spartanburg as well as a recent Juror’s Prize for the Fun House: Art of the Surreal, Fantastic and Bizarre Exhibition. Publications include a Review in Ceramics Art and Perception by Dr. Jerry Cullum for the Avian exhibition, and “Hard Won Wings” by Bridget Conn for the Life Support exhibition in Verve Magazine.
