MODERN MYTHOS

  • Stone Sparrow Design, LLC (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

You are invited on an odyssey through time and imagination, to discover the myths that form our collective unconscious. Uncanny symmetries emerge from the shadows of memory, illuminating timeless mysteries of our human nature. You may experience a dizzying sense of deja vu. Do not fear! Truth and beauty will be your guiding stars on this journey.

Born of the union between artist couple Richard T Scott and Jordan Baker, MODERN MYTHOS summons the muses of the old masters to explore the liminal space between the orient and the occident, the coupling of stoic and Buddhist philosophy. In Scott and Baker's Delphic creations, the depths of the human psyche are laid bare, inviting the courageous and the curious to descend into a realm where light and darkness become one. Baker’s Baroque lives writhe with the haunting of Japanese nature spirits, blending the Dutch tradition of vanitas with Shinto meditations on the cycles of death and rebirth. Her alchemical compositions alloy the motif’s of Georgia O’Keefe and Rachel Ruysch, creating a startlingly contemporary atmosphere. Scott’s figurative paintings follow Charon’s ferry to the gates of Hades, convene with Medusa among the ruins of civilization, traverse the fall of the Roman Republic and foretell the future of our own Autumnal Empire.

Join us for a mythic evening November 8th from 6-8 PM. Mythic attire is encouraged, but not mandatory. The artists will be in attendance and will be in costume. This exhibition will be on view until December 16th.

PARACOSM, a solo exhibition by Victor Grasso

  • Stone Sparrow Design, LLC (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

PARACOSM: A detailed imaginary world, especially one created by a child.

The images that make up Victor Grasso’s body of work come from the fantastical world he has created for himself in his imagination. He is not interested in complicated artist statements, rather, he is most interested in the ideas that swirl around in his head when he closes his eyes. The characters in his paintings are all part of a detailed, fantastic, imaginary world that are constantly evolving as he does. Victor approaches his compositions as if he is looking at the world through the lens of a child, first creating detailed studies of his visions in which he plots his story with swaths of color and pen and ink details. The works in this exhibition consist of studies, fully rendered watercolor paintings and the almost photo-realist, magical oil paintings he is best known for.

This exhibition opens with a reception on 4/12 from 6 - 8pm and remains on view until 5/27.

KRASSO MIHAYLOV - PAINTINGS

KRASSO MIHAYLOV - PAINTINGS

  • Stone Sparrow Design, LLC (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Krasso Mihaylov is a humble artist with a smile in the corners of his eyes, but with few words to offer in explanation of his work. He was born in Bulgaria, but has been a Brooklyn painter for the last 25 years. Has achieved notoriety in the art world with museum exhibitions and work held in international collections.

Upon first glance, a feeling of a spontaneous composition is evident and the obvious thing to notice is the large format scale of most of the paintings. Further contemplation changes first impressions of these pieces and they open up to tell a story. Typically one thinks of surrealism as the juxtaposition of improbable things offered in a dream-like way. Krasso’s surrealism oftentimes highlights the mundane by keeping the subject just outside of the frame, through playing with scale within the composition or by placing an ordinary, unthought of object or action as the main character. His works can be simple thoughts with open ended statements left to the viewer to decide or full of allegory and a deeper meaning left to the viewer to decipher.

This exhibition is a presentation of Krasso’s large format work. The combination of the scale of the work and the intimate size of the gallery makes this exhibition quite the experience. It’s as if you have stepped right into the mind of this clever artist.

Krasso’s solo opens with a reception on 2/15 from 6 - 8 pm and remains on view through 3/31.

Please note - most of the pieces in this exhibition are displayed unstretched to offer an easier way to transport. They will be shipped rolled to the collector, but information is available on estimated costs to stretch and ship. Email marina@stonesparrownyc.com with any questions or collector inquiries.

GOOD LUCK

GOOD LUCK, a solo exhibition by Tanya Gomelskaya. 1/11 - 2/8

This show is comprised of three distinct collections: Good Luck, Tongues and Intertwined. Through the works in her collections, Tanya is making commentary on the human condition. In the Good Luck series, she uses portraits painted on glass as a metaphor; a fragile canvas that is broken, pieced back together and recomposed. The Tongue series are more playful works made in response to the Good Luck pieces. They are at once grotesque and beautiful, small but loud. They are an exploration of materials employing 2D and 3D elements in oil, clay and resin. The Intertwined series is an ongoing exploration of the complexities of the human condition in which Tanya highlights beauty in imperfections. Utilizing composition and scale, she is forcing the viewer to consider what lies beneath the surface of the skin. These works use classical painting techniques juxtaposed with found objects and experimentation with format to get her ideas across to the viewer.

This exhibition will open with a reception on 1/11 from 6 - 8pm and will remain on view through 2/8. Contact gallery director, Marina Eliasi, at marina@stonesparrownyc.com with any questions or collector inquiries.

MASQUERADE, a group exhibition featuring the work of Christina Duarte, Kevin Sparkowich, Krasso Mihaylov, Justin Brooks, Chris Guest, Tim Roosen, Tanya Gomelskaya and Alexandra Manukyan. Modern language defines masquerade in two ways: a false show or pretense or the act of wearing a disguise. The origins of the word, mascarade or maschera, come from the late 16th century French and Italian and meant “mask”. This exhibition prompt inspired dark satirical narratives, introspective portraiture as well as more literal interpretations depicting costuming and masks from this talented roster of 2d and 3d artists.

The exhibition opens with a reception on 10/12 from 6 - 8pm EST. This show will remain on view in the gallery through 11/4.

THE DOG DAYS OF SUMMER

THE DOG DAYS OF SUMMER:

This exhibition title refers to the expression that is attached to the hottest days of summer, when the sun occupies the same space of the sky as the star Sirius (aka the dog star), but also to what it's more commonly used for as an expression: a time of stagnation. The pieces in the show are comprised of a few things we have shown during the pandemic that haven't been seen by many in person, as well as pieces that were created during this period of time that are being shown by us for the first time. This exhibition isn't specifically themed, but each artist chose their pieces to speak to the title of the show in their own ways.

This group exhibition contains the work of Kevin Sparkowich, Krasso Mihaylov, Shelah Horvitz, Justin Brooks, Victor Grasso, Chris Guest, J. L. King, Niels Corfitzen, Christina Duarte, Rob Plater, MJ Lindo Lawyer, Joshua Lawyer, Gigi Chen, Richard T. Scott and Tim Roosen.

Opening online on June 1 with an in-person reception on June 8 from 6-9 pm. The exhibition will be on view until August 20.

Rose Freymuth-Frazier brings a selection of works spanning the bulk of her vibrant career with the solo presentation: INNER SPACES. This exhibition combines many early paintings with her most recent body of work to create not only an exceptionally visually compelling show, but provides a deep look into the mind of this important contemporary artist over the past 15 years. Collector and art advocate Steven Bennet says, “In Rose Freymuth-Frazier’s paintings, figurative realism collides with atmospherics and eroticism to create work that is both intense and quiet, introspective and exhibitionist, real and improbable. She challenges our assumptions about the inner lives of others with scenes that are simultaneously puzzling and compelling, jarring and irresistible.”

This presentation opens on 4/20 with a reception from 5 - 9pm and will remain on view until 5/25. Email gallery director Marina Eliasi for an exhibition preview.
